Equilibrium problem
« on: June 27, 2013, 06:55:11 AM »
In the reaction C2H4 (g) + H2O (g) <---> C2H5OH (g) with K=2 , 2 moles of C2H4 and 2 moles of H2O are at equilibrium in a specific temperature and in a container with volume of 2 liters. What is the yield of the reaction?

I got 80% but this is not in among the choices  ???

Is 66% a choice?

Can you show how you got 80%.

Oops! I had a mistake.. I forgot to convert moles to the concentration. Now I get 66% the same as you. Since K=2 and the concentration of water and ethylene is 1 mol/lit , the concentration of ethanol would be 2 mol/lit. If the reaction were to be completed then the conc. would be 3 mol/lit. Thus the yield of the reaction is 2/3 = 66%!

So what's wrong with the question?!

I don't think it is a question to us, it is a question to whoever asked it originally  :P

:)) Yes you're absolutely right. However , I found this in one of the university entrance exams and what surprises me is that these exams has never had such mistakes.

Anyway , thanks for your help ;)
