Hi, I am trying desperately to figure out the names of these two molecules. One is an aldol addition product and the other is the aldol condensation product. The two reactants were 2-acetylpyridine and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, and the solvent was sodium carbonate.
Here is the structure of the two compounds.

The first one is 3-hydroxy-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)propan-1-one
the second is (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one.
Try and figure out why they are named in such a fashion.
Thanks to ChemDraw.
