i'm interested in compound synthesis. what area of chemistry is this? ie what field of chemistry must i go into? apparently according to some sites, synthesis is NOT one of the major branches of chemistry. i want to know how to synthesize whatever compound i want. what's the name of this field and what are some of the top grad schools for this field?

People tend to split it into organic and inorganic.  If you like making weird complexes with funny colors, go inorganic.  If you like things with lots of carbon, go organic.  If you don't care so much about the way the molecules look, but rather in how they behave small scale, go materials.
