naming and drawing compounds
« on: July 09, 2013, 07:14:27 AM »
I have 3 questions; one with no answer as I don't know where to start.

1) Draw and name: (CH3)3 C Br

I know its a bromo something, there are four connections with the central C but can't draw it properly or name it.

2) name: CH3 CH2 CH(CH2 CH3) C(CH2 CH3) = CH2

I think this is 2,3-diethylpent-1-ene. Am I correct?

3) this one is a drawing. i dont know how to take a picture and attach it so I will try and describe it!

its a cyclohexene, 1 double bond, a H3C group coming off the double bond, an ethyl group coming off another carbon and a H3C and a CH3 coming off the same carbon atom. Ive numbered from the double bond being no1. any good???

according to the numbering Ive used, I think its called 3-ethyl-1,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-1-ene. Is this correct?

I would really appreciate useful information for each of these but would also appreciate no cryptic clues as to how to answer them though please! Thank you.

This is easier than the others. As you say - C in the middle with 4 substituents. What do you think the 4 substituents are?

For nomenclature, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IUPAC_nomenclature_of_organic_chemistry and show an attempt.

I think that's right.

You can attach an image you have created by clicking the Additional Options... link below the edit field in the post reply window. Alternatively you can use SMILES (as I have below). Details here.

Based on the name you gave, that would be:

C1(C)=CC(CC)CC(C)(C)C1

@ dan: thank you!  my description wasnt all that tragic then.

for 1) Ive got (dont laugh) 2,2-bromomethylpropane. Or is it 2-bromo-2-methylpropane?  am i way off here?  :-\

Correct - you only group the locant numbers if the substituent is the same.
