HPLC HP 1050 set up

Hi I purchased a used HP 1050 HPLC.
I am wondering if there is anyone running one.  few set up questions

The unit requires compressed gas to run the pumps. I am wondering how to best accomplish this.    A large compressor with a appropriate filter?  or compressed nitrogen?    if there is anyone running this unit please contact me and let me know how to set up my gasses.    Thank you very much.

Hi there, yes, I've used Hewlet Packard/Agilent brand HPLC's before, the 1050 model in particular.  I don't recall the liquid pumps running on compressed gases, however, but instead the pumps run on electricity.  Either you're confusing sparge gas with driving gas, or you're actually using a gas chromatograph and not an HPLC, or I'm seriously confused.  Can you double check the words associated with gas connections, and let us know what they are?

As an example, here's a photo of part of the back of an HP 1050 that I found online.  It shows the helium sparge port.

I was surprised by this too, unless you are using an Supercritical Fluid system and you back pressure regulator is a gas pressurised needle valve.

The HP 1050 uses a sparge gas to degas the solvent(s).  The common sparge gas
is helium, which can get expensive.

The pumps on the model we had used electricity for the actual pumping.  You
had the draw off valves for the solvent on the pump, but no actual gas to the
pump.

The compressed air was used for valve switching. 

I only remember the autosampler requiring the compressed air, but
other accessories could.

A quick Google tells me that you also need compressed nitrogen to use Agilent Technologies QQQ & Q-TOF instrumentation, which I've never used.  But you didn't mention that you were using one of those.

I tried to use a third party HP1050 a few weeks ago (didn't have any luck) but it had a cylinder connected to it, and was told to turn the gas on. I guess the gas was used for valves as it didn't have gas sparging

Then the model the O.P. is working with is much more old-fashioned than even the ancient one I was working with back in 2006, because it didn't work that way.  Stepan: and marquis: seem to have experienced this sort of thing recently.  But I only remember compressed gas valve switching in a Waters 710 Autowisp, and even that style of autoinjector goes back to 1990.

I have a 1050 that I used last year, but I have not used compressed gas with it.  We do single injections.

Well, I downloaded a PDF copy of the maintenance manual for an HP 1050 and the injector definitely does need compressed air to run.  I guess it was always set-up for me, and I just never noticed the hook-up in the back.  :-\  At any rate, the specs in the document call for 5 psi, so you will need a regulator to deliver that pressure with some accuracy.  If your facility doesn't have house compressed air, then a nitrogen tank is pretty inexpensive.  And should likely last a long time, since the injector won't need to use the gas pressure for a long amount of time.

Does the nitrogen tank need to have some purity or it can be a normal nitrogen tank?

I think the He gas is used for the solvent degasser accessory (but I could be wrong). I believe the other option is to have the degasser attached to a vacuum, thus obviating the need for the He gas. Can someone confirm?

Yes, helium was used as the sparge gas in the 1050.

The 1100 series HPLC switched to a vacuum system.
