Problem in Gravity Filtration. PLEASE help me!!!
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:28:39 PM »
Hi all. the story is begin from a food sample - coconut spread.

I have to test the SO2 content in coconut spread (pandan flavour) use test kit by titration method.

so, I dilute the sample with distilled water and I filter it using normal filter paper and filter funnel. The final filtrate is a bit cloudy in pale green.

In the titration method, the last step is to add a drop of sulfate reagent to change the solution to violet colour. Then titrate it with another reagent to blue colour (end point).

The problem I faced is the colour change for the solution is very not noticeable (due to the cloudy).

Is there other way to yield the clearer filtrate?

Is the Vacuum filtration will give better result?

Please help me!!

Add some celite to your solution before you filter. How much depends on how cloudy it is. If possible a flat bed filtration would be best but you may find that a fluted filter paper is adequate.

You need to experiment with your standard solution to make sure the filter aid does not interfere with your assay.
