Making PMMA powder
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:44:12 AM »
Hello everyone,

I want to make PMMA powder. I know that such powders exist for sale, however I want to make one of my own, as I am planning to create a powder mixed with additional dyes.

Particle size should be approximately 15 micrometers.

What are the ways to prepare such powder in lab or machine shop conditions? Can anyone advise me to read any appropriate book?

Thank you

The monomer, MMA, is a nasty thing for non-chemists. Available as a glue for PMMA, but it's volatile and the vapour is extremely unpleasant at the eyes.

I suggest instead to buy a chunk of PMMA and file or grind it to powder.

I have tried grinding it, and it didn't provide satisfactory results. Instead of small spheres, I get large elongated chunks of material. Do you know of any way making it using some kind of  chemical process?

Here's a reference to the emulsion polymerization of PMMA:  http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/bk-2002-0804.ch003  If you can find this document, the bibliographical references may lead you to something simple you can use, if you're not into nano-composites.

Emulsion Polymerization. Then precipitated by addition of NH4Cl to destabilize the dispersion to remove surfactant. Washing them with DI water until clean and clear. Dry and grinding a little. You will get pure PMMA powder without surfactant inside.
