Pipette for titration
« on: September 13, 2013, 09:49:58 PM »
Hi guys, just a question, Why is it important to use the same pipette and glassware throughout the entire titration?

Why do you think?

(This is just a little reminder that you are supposed to show some work of your own on this forum, even for a question such as this, which is very close to asking for a definition.)
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I had a thought before, the purpose of using the same pipette and glassware is to ensure the contamination will not change and affect the reaction. That's my understanding so far.

No matter how good the glassware is, it is never perfect, and every pipette/volumetric flask pair has its own volume ratio. Finding this ratio should be a part of the glass calibration procedure (http://www.titrations.info/volumetric-glass-calibration). For example for the A class 20 mL pipette and the A class 100 mL volumetric flask volume ratio is something between 0.2004 and 0.1995, so the difference between final results for two given pairs of pipette/flask can be up to 0.5%.
