Reaction Mechanism Help (Is this right?)
« on: November 27, 2013, 09:00:39 PM »
My organic professor has provided this as an 'extra credit' opportunity for one of our tests.

Can anyone verify that this is the correct reaction mechanism for the addition of a diatomic halogen and water to 1-ethyl-cyclopentene?

The "intermediate" you drew looks like an attempt to draw a transition state. It's certainly not an intermediate, and it is also not the actual transition state either. You probably don't have to draw transition states for your mechanism, though.

There are other mistakes, also, but you are on the right track. You could find this in your book quite easily.

I think it should be like this. You can think about it.

I probably should've included this in the original question, but she asked for the intermediates to be drawn also.

The person trying to help also drew a slightly incorrect mechanism.

But to the OP: I don't think you understand what "intermediate" means. Intermediates in sophomore organic are not generally drawn with partial single bonds, or any kind of partial bond for that matter.

Sir, spirochete
If there's something wrong please tell us, we would like to know.
Just say it wrong, we can't know how to fix it.
what do you means "intermediate" ? I would like to know your idea too.. .
I really don't like the way you answer question like you never say something. If we put the question here it means that we really need the answer. You can give us the source to answer the question, we'll thank you for that. We are confusing with the problems we get and you make us more and more...
It's just my opinion, dont justify it.
Thank you.
