    I was going through a reference for synthesis of phenylglycine. I found this reaction as the first part...


I think the reaction seems to be somewhat problematic. In presence of (NH4)2CO3, the reaction is reported to be forming an hydantoin which is the Bucherer–Bergs  - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzoin_condensation

What do you guys think... does the reference seem to be faulty...
