Magnesium and Acid Mechanism
« on: January 21, 2014, 03:13:42 PM »
Does anyone know the mechanism for the reaction between:

1) Magnesium and Hydrochloric Acid
2) Magnesium and Ethanoic Acid
3) Magnesium and Hydrochloric Acid with Copper Sulphate as a catalyst

I have tried looking on the internet but have not been able to find anything.

My friend JohnWatson seems to think you have not read forum rules.

I have now read the forum rules - apologies.

I have attempted to research for the answer myself but the answers on the internet are really not clear as to what the mechanisms for the reactions above should be.

I have to admit I had to look around a bit to find this link using GOOGLE
http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/content/keystage3/chemistry/pc/learningsteps/RMALC/LO_Template.swf
Which led me to this link in WIKI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_displacement_reaction

What do you think?

That's the mechanism? I was thinking about a diagram involving dipoles, bonds breaking etc. rather than simply a single displacement reaction. Or have I over-complicated it?

Bingo.

Such mechanisms are discussed in organic chemistry, but in inorganic they usually don't matter. Reactions are too simple and too fast.

Thank you for the help.
