stereochemistry hw help
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:11:03 PM »
Hey guys, I'm extremely behind in my organic chem 1 class, we're on stereochemistry.
Here is my current study guide I need help with.
Does anyone know a website or youtube stream I can review this on? Our professor doesn't make it very clear.

True /false- if false, explain why-
1- The necessary and sufficient condition for chirality to exist is that a compound is non-superimposable upon its mirror image. (I SAID TRUE?)
2-If the specific rotation of a compound is known, you can make the appropriate r-s assignments.(NOT SURE)
3-The configuration of a chiral carbon atom can change in a reaction only if a bond to that chiral carbon atom is broken.(NOT SURE)
4-If the configuration of a chiral carbon atom changes in a reaction, then its R-S assignment must change.(NOT SURE)
5-Compounds containing chiral carbon atoms must be chiral.(False? Meso compounds can contain chiral centers, but are not chiral overall)

Your answers to 1 and 5 are correct. For the others, it is really a case of understanding the definitions of the terms.

I recommend bookmarking this IUPAC glossary:
