Hi

I Have a compound have two carboxylic group like this





if i want to make a reactions on carboxylic group , which group will be active and react ,1 or 2 ?

and how can i prove that by IR, HNMR, MS????

2 is more sterically hindered, and has a electron withdrawing Nitrogen next to it.  I would say 1.

.. and how to prove it? Various ways.

Making one or other isomer some other way that does not have this ambiguity. Not sure if NMR experiments would help (NOESY or similar)?

I would look for commercial derivatives of glutamic acid, such as those sold by BACHEM.
