Determine ΔG° Given E Cell
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:27:26 PM »
Use the reduction potentials, the unbalanced half reactions and the unbalanced chemical equation below to find ΔG° in kJ for the reaction:

Reaction    E° (V)
Cu+(aq) + e− → Cu(s)   0.521
Al3+(aq) + e− → Al(s)   -1.662

Cu+(aq) + Al(s) → Cu(s) + Al3+(aq)

E cell was found (marked correct) to be: 2.183 V

My attempt:
ΔG°= -n(F)(Ecell)
ΔG°=-(1)(9.649E4C/mol)(2.138V)
ΔG°= -206295.62 J
ΔG°= -206 kJ/mol

However, this will only give me the answer in kJ/mol. How can I figure out ΔG° in kJ with just the information provided? Any guidance is very appreciated! Thank you.
