Approximately how much nitric acid is needed to dissolve 1 tonne of copper before it becomes ineffective?
concentrated nitric acid 70% by weight
or
concentrated nitric acid 98% by weight
This is what i tried:
for the
1,000,000 g in a tonne
Molar mass Cu = 63.5g/mol
1,000,000/63.5 = 15748.03 mol
Balanced equation:
Cu + 4 HNO3 → Cu(NO3)2 + 2 H2O + 2 NO2
1mol Cu reacts with 4mol HNO3
You have xmol HNO3, which will react with 15748.03 mol Cu
15748.03 * 4 = 62992.13 mol
Molar mass HNO3 = 63g/mol
xg HNO3 = x/63 = 62992.13 mol HNO3
62992.13 * 63 = 3,968,503.94g HNO3 needed?
3968.50kg..
Am i correct?
