Effects of pH on Sn1 and Sn2 reactions
« on: May 18, 2014, 08:29:59 PM »
How does pH affect the reaction rate of Sn1 and Sn2 reactions?

So far this is what I have:

Sn2 - reactions work best at a basic pH (>7) because the nucleophile, having a negative charge, will be repelled by the negatively charged OH- in solution. This effect will increase the reaction rate because the nucleophile is incorporated into the rate-determing step

Sn1 - I do not know.

Can anyone explain how Sn1 reactions are affected? Also, is the explanation for Sn2 correct? If not, any input would be appreciated.

Thank you.
