Make 0.1 M NH3 (aq)
« on: June 09, 2014, 05:38:00 AM »
How do I mix this solution?

0.1M= Mol/L= (m/M)/L . So if I need 1 L. I will dissolve 0.1*17.03=1.7 g NH3 in 1L water. Is this correct?

Is this correct?

Yes, 1.7 g of NH3(g).

Practically, it is easier to dilute a conc. ammonia solution though.

Thanks! If I know the conc of a NH3 solution how do I calculate how much water I need to dilute it with?

ex) I have 1L 2 M NH3(aq) and I want 1L 0.1 M NH3(aq).

2M=m/M , m=2*17.03=34.06g

I want 0.1M . 0.1=(m/M)/V  0.1=(34.06/17.03)/V,    V=20L . So I need to dilute it in 20L water in order to get 0.1M. I think I'm wrong. Need *delete me*

Almost - you need to dilute it to a total final volume of 20 L (so add about 19 L of water).

Alternatively, you could dilute a smaller amount of the 2 M stock solution and make 1 L of 0.1 M dilute solution instead of 20 L.
