PTFE vs FEP: Chemical resistance
« on: June 11, 2014, 06:08:30 AM »
How similar is the Chemical Resistance of Teflon (PTFE) versus FEP? I have an application involving Styrene for which PTFE is rated as a suitable MOC but I cannot find similar tables for tests with FEP.

Unfortunately FEP seems more common as a lining material for pumps etc. than PTFE & hence I'd love to know.

As far as I remember then FEP should be more resistant than teflon but its just random thought I remember from lectures.
This helps?

Well thanks for that link. I had found that one before (and similar ones) but it's not very helpful since it says generically "Excellent Chem. Resistance" for both.

In my experience they are both pretty damn stable and its just a case of FEP being used where a bit of rigidity is needed. Apart from that the only difference is price and reactivity with sodium naphthalide (where PTFE is a bit more reactive). You should be fine with FEP

FEP resists ALL!!!!! Not cheap, but stores liquid bromine like a charm (maybe superacids would be the only MORE corrosive thing)!  Also can be refrigerated and heated in boiling nitric acid!

You will be fine with either one. The BIGGEST difference between the two boils down to Temperature and Flexibility. PTFE has a higher Temp rating and a Longer Flex Life.

Pricing they are pretty much each the same price but if you need longer lengths than you would need to go with FEP.
