Stereodescriptors with small letter and number
« on: June 16, 2014, 08:35:04 AM »
What does the stereodescriptor 3a on the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen mean?
Is a for axial chirality?
Why is the number 3?

a is not for axial orientation. The 3a is used to differentiate the other C atom that is numbered 3. That's all there is to it.

The one with the (R) above it, next to the one with the 4 above it.

Okay, thanks. Nomenclature seem to be the toughest part of organic chemistry :P.
