Molten NaCl battery
« on: August 07, 2014, 10:29:57 AM »
Hi,

I am interested in designing a molten NaCl  cell (battery) , as what I saw was astonishing when some technician in was fixing a photo copying machine and the thermal battery of the machine stopped working while he trying to boost it, he asked me for some table salt and  to melt it , then he dipped  the wires in a glass of the melt n  get some energy for lil secs , he was a great chemist to me :D
what materials i need to design molten NaCl cell  , I tryed to do the same thing like him but didn't work.

This sounds very strange. NaCl melts at 800°C. How did you melt it and keep it liquid? Or do you mean you dissolved it in water? In either case, it wouldn't make a battery; there are no spontaneous reactions to generate electrical energy. To electrolyse NaCl (liquid or solution) requires putting energy in. It sounds like the guy wanted a conduction pathway between the wires. Maybe he was just cleaning the wires - perhaps there was some insulating deposit on the wires that would come off if it was briefly electrolysed in salt water.

we have Muffle furnace so it can reach 800 degree C.we put a bunch of NaCl (almost 100 g) in quartz cup n melt them.
I am not sure if he was just cleaning the wires or something , but this is what he did and told us , as the thermal battery inside the machine wasn't working.
anyway I read a little bit about the molten salt battery , just wondering how it work and how to design one.

So you had a guy come fix your copying machine and he was like, "Huh, battery's not working. You got any table salt you can heat up to 800 degrees for me so I can get this thing started again?"
