Can someone please explain how to name a compound with multiple OH?




Also, can you tell me how to name long ass condensed structures like (CH₃)₂CH(CH₂)₂OCH₂CH₃

I couldnt figure out how to work the SMILES, but if anyone can assist with the second part I would appreciate it.

Using IUPAC is really weird for this haha.

I think the best way to explain is just to go read up on these sites, they would basically say the same thing I'd tell you but better.

You also said with multiple OH, but there is no alcohol functional group I can see from your example.

thanks man. The OH question was supposed to refer to a skeletal structure I attempted to draw but Im new here so couldnt figure it out. The compound has 8 carbons with an OH on the second carbon, a methyl on the 7th, and a methyl on the 5th, with another OH branched off it. My guess was 5-methol-7-methyl-2-octanol.

2-hydroxy,5,7-dimethyl-octanol

In this particular example I think it's easier to just give you the answer, so you can see how its done. 
If you have any questions about why its one way vs the other, please ask.
