identifying atoms

Given a dark shiny solid, what nondestructive test can be used to determine if it is an iodine or a metallic element.

The best is IMO mass spectrometry. It is destructive, however, it requires only very small amounts of sample. Or you can dissolve a bit in ethanol and then drop a few drops into starch solution and it should turn blue if its iodine
