Equipment to heating an oil mixture
« on: November 07, 2014, 12:05:21 PM »
In order to get a lipid selenium compound high bioavailable I shall to do the following preparation:

A mixture of a tri-conjugated  fatty acid, (tung or bitter gourd oil) with gray selenium powdered (3%) is heated to 230 Celsius degrees for 3 hours with active stirring. When the heat is been applied the mixture must receive an air bubbling to oxidize double bonds before selenium be bound.

What is the proper heat equipment to use, blanket or plate? What temp controlled brand is recommended.

How to apply air bubbling?

Thank you

I've moved this topic from Citizen Chemist here to Organic Chemistry, and I hope you'll get the help from our regulars.  Some caveats I'd like to mention however.

It seems like you're making organic selenides.  Its an interesting concept to be sure.  You're a little unsure of some of the techniques, and we're here to help.  However, we can't teach you organic chemistry laboratory techniques with forum postings.  You need the very basics of laboratory chemistry from school, and to understand some basics of synthetic organic chemistry.  So you'll have to bear with us if we're too general for you to just make this stuff.

A little Googleing tells me you may have read a patent from someone who suggests that this is a cancer medicine.  We don't mind helping a person learn some techniques, but we won't help you self-medicate, for liability reasons.  So I hope we can keep this thread theoretical.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Optimally, I would use a heating stir plate with "sand bath" to get even heating on the surface of your RBF.  Really as long as the heat is applied evenly you should be ok no matter what the source is.
O2  is usually actively supplied by means of a canister of compressed gas or an O2 generator, which is bubbled directly into the stirring mix.  I typically use some tubing and a glass pipet or syringe/needle depending on what I'm doing exactly.
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.
