Butanone + Water + H2SO4
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:14:50 PM »
Suppose I added 98% H2SO4 (w/w) to a butanone sample that had (say) 15% dissolved water in it; would I end up with fairly dry butanone?

Butanone has a high solubility in H2O (more than 20% w/w I think).

PS. Has anyone come across a H2SO4-H2O-Butanone  liq-liq miscibility diagram?

You might well end up with other things as well!
Actually I have no idea. As chemistry is an experimental science why not try it out? It would be very easy to find out what happens.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

Thanks! :)

I've tried that first part already. With neat MEK. No reaction. At least at room temp.

The water expt. I will try. Yes it's an experimental science. :) I was just impatient n lazy.
