Reaction to Produce a lighter gas !
« on: January 16, 2015, 12:44:18 PM »
There is reaction to make a lighter gas (i.e) lighter than air so it is used for lifting balloons.  The reaction includes Aluminum, baking soda & another chemical which I don't know.

Please tell me the reaction and what is that 3rd chemical?

What gases lighter than air do you know?

i don't know what is that gas. but  according to wikipedia, the gas may be

Neon
Ammonia
Methane
Hydrogen
helium

since the reaction include baking soda which contains hydrogen, so it miight be hydrogen but not sure (it is a guess). all that i know is given in question, i hope some one will try to find that reaction and the third chemical.

You can eliminate Ne / He with some thought based on your raw materials.

Isn't it your job to solve the problem? I thought that's the idea of a homework.

You did a step in the right direction with these gases. As curiouscat already signalled - noble gases can't be produced in reactions.

You guessed hydrogen - can you think of any reactions in which it can be produced?

Can you think of a reaction of the metal that would produce hydrogen?

some one asked me about the third chemical. the lighter gas is used in balloons. ( not  hot air balloons) simple toy balloons

the reaction include three reactants(aluminium, baking soda and a third chemical which i don't know.) may be one of them is a catalyst

sadiqeen: we've already asked you to read the Forum Rules{click}, and I want you to read them carefully this time.  We don't give complete answers to any question on this forum, we always want someone to learn the basics themselves, even if they're not an expert.  In fact, the less someone knows, the less sure we are they can handle the chemicals safely, and the less we want to help.  Your reaction quoted is a bad one, there are other reactions.  Your list of the lighter than air gasses is technically correct, but many of your gasses have only 90% the density of air, you should realize that you can't lift a solid container, even the thinnest of balloons, with a gas only slightly lighter than air.  You have work to do, and we won't do it all for you.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
