Topic: Can someone help with finding the shape and resonance structures of a molecule?  (Read 4530 times)

Ok. I have combed the Internet and tried myself to find the shape and resonance structures of CH3COCHN2. I am almost certain that this molecule has a keytone in the middle, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fit 32 electrons into this molecule and still have it reasonable. It should have 3 resonance structures.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Your structure makes no sense, unless you have something like this:
CC(C1N=N1)=O

With 3 resonance structures is the compound not
CC(CN=[N+]=[N-])=O
?
You can get three from the azide.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

CH3C(O)NH2 would be a more straightforward molecule, but as someone else just pointed out, there are not three reasonable resonance structures for my suggestion.  I agree that the problem does not have a typo.

I am convinced that there is an error in the formula that was given to me now. I just thought there may have been something that I was overlooking.

I can't see 3 resonance structures for acetamide, but I can for diazoacetone. I don't think it's a typo.

Can you show us the resonance forms you have worked out so far?
