benzoyl peroxide staining on an action figure remedy
« on: February 25, 2015, 06:42:46 PM »
hello my name is chris

i have a 1977 starwars jawa action figure it was covered in ink and paint which imbedded itself into the rubbber plastic years and years ago. after using many different cleaning agents nothing worked.

someone said acne spot cream (oxy10) which has 10% benzoyl peroxide in when applied directly onto the area of ink will bleach the ink out of plastic when the figure is in direct sunlight or a under a lamp for a few hours or longer depending on how bad the stain is

i tried it under a lamp and too my amazement the stain vanished but after 48 hours a white specs / fuzzy white crytal stuff appeared on the figure where i applied the cream.

now when wiped with a cotton bud or cloth the white fuzzy stuff comes right off and the figure looks pristine again.

but again a few days later it reappears.

but wipe it off and it looks great again

my question is will it keep coming back? will it eventually all ooze out of the plastic over time if i play the waiting game?. is there a solution that will eradicate this white stuff coming out of the plastic for good. i read somewhere i could use a oxyclean, by submerging the figures legs in it for 24 hours and it may kill off the acne cream bleaching crystal white underneath the plastic
(oxyclean contains sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3•H2O2), an adduct of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

many thanks for looking chemical forumers
