ESI mass Spec adducts.
« on: April 10, 2006, 12:01:03 PM »
Hi
Another question on ESI mass spec. WHen I run my dAMP molecule on the mass spec, I get a number of different adducts (the molecule is in a variety of salts). What I want to know is are these adducts definitely formed in the solution or are they formed in the gas phase of the mass spec.
i.e. are the adducts the products of a "real" reaction or an artifact of the mass spec?

If it was caught in the mass spec it definately had to be in the gas phase. Maybe Sandra can give you a bettr answer but this is what I would think. The NaCl adduct is not a "new compound", I would think of it as an aerosol particle that your analyte stuck too.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Cheers
Is there a way if testing this?
How can i know if these compounds are products of a reaction or products of the electrospray ionisation?

Is it possible to buy the pure chemical and run a standard?  If that shows the formation of adducts you can blame it on your ESI

My standard shows a peak at 332 corresponding to dAMP+H and 354 corresponding to dAMP+Na
