Bismuth
« on: April 26, 2015, 01:04:16 AM »
How dangerous is it to work with hydrochloride acid. I have a quality face mask and gloves and have made thermite (hopefully waiting magnesium in the mail -_-) but want to make sure I'm ok to work with it.

As long as you follow security - gloves, glasses for eye protection, coat, fume hood or at least doing you experiments in the open air - hydrochloric acid is not more dangerous than most other acids.

Any particular reason to name this thread "bismuth"?

And how exactly does that work?  What reaction are you hoping will happen?  These are important questions to ask, if you want to learn something when you're done.

The reaction of Pepto bismol and hydrochloric acid breaks away to bismuth and hydrochloric acid compound in which you add  aluminum which replaces the bismuth  then strain it leaving behind the raw bismuth for you to melt down

I've found evidence that that reaction probably won't happen, and that there's a simpler way to get the reaction you want, over here:

How interesting, what I gathered from it is all I need to do is hit it with a blowtorch?

Apparently so.  What I can't find is concentration of active in a typical formulation of medicine.  I suspect it will b e a very small ingot.

Very interesting. I'll probably try this out sooner I'll let you know the results – on a side note I bet a whole ball would probably-year-old three cubic ingot or the equivalent.

cubic ingot
For an instant I was amused thinking you meant cubit
Still not sure what you meant
WIKI has several meanings for cubic

Can we assume you are adding Bismuth to your collection?

Hahahaha I forget to say inch my bad. Yes I do chemistry as a hobby and bismuth is one of the coolest metals I've seen so far.
