Reaction Mechanism of Polyester in Cl- and HCl
« on: June 02, 2015, 01:37:59 AM »
Hi folks,
I am now investigating the chemical reaction of Polyester resin specimen under Hydrochloric acid solution in the liquid phase and the gas phase.

In general, the composition of HCL in the liquid phase is HCl +H2O -> H3O + Cl- . Hence Cl- is mainly attack the ester group of polyester resin. On the other hand, the composition of the vapor phase of HCl is H-Cl which is covalence bond.

1) What I would like to ask is that what is the kinetic of chemical reaction will occur to react with ester group of Polyester resin.
In my opinion, i think the chemical reaction of Cl- in the liquid phase might not occur.
 What do you think?

If chemical reaction occur, how can we know?

Thank you in advance

Why do you ignore presence of H+?

first you need to write the mechanism of the reaction ... just go through the mechanism of the esterification and hydrolysis of esters ..I think you will get the answer

I believe in the liquid phase, acid hydrolysis of the ester groups will occur as there is a mineral acid presence to provide the proton. Esters hydrolyze to parent alcohols and carboxylic acids.
