Gas problem
« on: June 11, 2015, 08:14:32 PM »
Question: Molten sodium chloride decomposes when an electrical current is passed through it. How
many millilitres of chlorine gas will be produced at 500°C and 101.3 kPa from 1.00g of
sodium chloride?

After working through the problem I got an answer of 1086 mL, however the answer on the worksheet is 543 mL. I realized that my answer is double the correct one. Could someone help me find where I made an error? Thank you.

Moles of NaCl: 1.00 g ÷ 58.44 g/mol = 0.0171115674 mol

Moles of Chlorine gas: 0.0171115674 mol x 1 mol Cl/1 mol NaCl = 0.0171115674 mol

Volume of Chlorine gas: (101.3 kPa)(V) = 0.0171115674 mol(8.314 kPa.L/K.mol)(773 K)

                                                  V  = 0.0171115674 mol(8.314 kPa.L/K.mol)(773 K)/(101.3 kPa)

                                                  V  = 1.08560006579 L

                                                  V  = 1085.60006579 mL

                                                  V  = 1085.60006579 mL

What is the formula of chlorine gas? (also, mind your sig figs)
