Double bond carbon to oxygen
« on: June 14, 2015, 08:08:17 PM »
I am a little confused with the double bond between oxygen and carbon.
Oxygen has 6 valence electrons and needs 2 more to satisfy the octet rule.
When it bonds to carbon with a double bond, that would satisfy the octet rule.
However, all diagrams I have seen shows the double bond and 2 lone Lewis structure pairs, why does'nt it show 3 lone pairs?

How many electrons form the C=O system?

discodermolide,
The Carbon atom requires 2 more bonds to complete its octet, which the Oxygen supplies.
The Oxygen atom requires 2 more bonds to complete its octet, which the carbon supplies.
Both should now be happy as they comply with the octet rule.
The Oxygen shows only 2 Lewis lone pairs, why not 3 lone pairs?
I am missing something, could you please explain where I am going wrong?

discodermolide,
Sorry to trouble you with this question, the penny just dropped all OK now.

Care to explain what is your answer? At the moment thread is left "hanging", without any explanation.

Borek,
Sorry for no explanation.
Oxygen has 6 valence electrons and requires 2 more to satisfy the octet rule.
When Carbon bonds to the Oxygen it shares 2 electrons of carbon and carbon shares 2 electrons of oxygen.
This then shows 2 lone Lewis diagram pairs.
