Constructing angular function

I'm having trouble constructing angular function. This question required to construct a function for the 3d x^2-y^2 orbital.

The solution was x^2 - y^2 = r^2sin^2theta[cos^2theta - sin^2theta]

The pictures I attached was the information they gave me. Thanks.

What's the actual wording of the question?

Also, are you sure you've typed the solution out correctly? I believe the θ's in the brackets should be φ's.

Do you know how to express x and y in polar coordinates (r,θ,φ)? What is x2 - y2?
To relate to the given functions: Do you know expressions for sin2φ and cos2φ in terms of sinφ and cosφ?
