Let's talk about red sludge and its possibilities
« on: August 22, 2015, 11:52:12 AM »
Hi!

Yesterday, i was thinkin' about the red sludge. What about its utilization? I read wikipedia ant its wrote red sludge contains a large amount of iron-oxid (24-45%). Can it be extracted? Or used for something? I heard about its can be used as a soil, but i think about industrial use.
(Sorry for the wrongs at the text, I don't speak english so perfect.)
So, lets start talking

Another common name is red mud.  We've discussed it before, for example here: http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=80950.msg295244#msg295244
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Recovering the iron seems rather simple, just with a blast furnace - no idea if it's economical, or rather if it should be done to preserve the environment. Though, the economic incentive would be to recover titanium, but I have found no simple means to separate it from silicon.
