exothermic reaction and an adiabatic process
« on: April 28, 2006, 02:24:29 AM »
This was asked on some gen-chem exam (and posted on some other forum) - but I believe it is interesting enough to be discussed here as well. I will post link to the original discussion eventually, but I don't want to spoil discussion before it starts.

An exothermic reaction takes place in an adiabatic process. What will
happen to the temp of the system?
 A) the temp will increase
 B) the temp will decrease
 C) it will remain constant.
 D) any of the above.

I think whoever asked that question intended to confuse the student with the word 'exothermic' , which doesn't make sense here anyway, I believe. In any case, the temp change depends on the work being done which is not specified, so I would go for D) : any of the above.

*Ignore me, I am impatient* for an old post.  What's the answer?  I think it's D), too, because no parameters were specified.

An exothermic reaction takes place in an adiabatic process.

Sounds like a combustion reaction taking place inside a well-insulated caloriometer.
