Difference between malic enzyme and malate dehydrogenase
« on: December 19, 2015, 07:08:03 AM »
Well, the question is really simple, but despite the fact that I've searched among many websites, I've not found the answer. In some sites the conversion of oxalacetate into malate is referred to be catalysed by the malic enzyme, and in other ones is refrered to be catalysed by malate dehydrogenase. I know in mamals there are 2 malate dehydrogenases (cytosolic and mithocondrial) and i want to know if malic enzyme is one of them, both of them (so it's a synonym) or none of them (another enzyme).

It seems that malic enzyme is name for group of enzymes:

I've just found the solution, I think.

Malic enzyme seems to catalyze the conversion of malate into pyruvate, and not into oxalacetate.

Yes, malic enzyme performs a decarboxylation, but malate dehydrogenase does not.
