Hi:
I am trying to interpret an NMR. From GC/MS, bp determination, nitrous acid tests, pH tests, KBr IR I believe with great certainty that I am looking at o-nitroaniline. I have one question, what is the broad singlet at around 6 ppm from? I can tell that I am looking at aromatic hydrogens by where the multiplets fall in the range. Is it from the neighboring H to the NO2 group? There is a link at the bottom if you want to view the spectra.

It's from the hydrogens on the NH
2
group.

Whenever you see a broad peak in an NMR, its likely due to a proton capable of forming a hydrogen bond (e.g. N-H, O-H).
