Thermochem general terms help?
« on: February 27, 2016, 10:39:40 PM »
Hey there,

I was working on my chemistry webassign (https://i.imgur.com/eGJURsn.png) and have some answers already. However, I'm unsure about what the terms mean.

For example, they gave me ΔG°f, but are asking for ΔG for the reaction...what's the difference between them? I know that the f means formation. They other questions ask for ΔH°f and S° for HOCl but what's the difference?

Thanks

They're giving you the standard energies of formation for Cl2O (standard because it's at standard conditions). This is irrespective of the reaction they list.

The first three questions you answered are pertaining to the whole reaction, not just the Cl2O.

The last two questions concern the heat of formation and standard entropy for HOCl only.
Or you could, you know, Google it.

Though actually after thinking about it some more there may not be enough information given to answer those last two questions? Is there any more to this question?

Or perhaps someone else can catch something I'm not. Or maybe you'll get it with my hint and can explain it to me!
