Climate change caused by human activities that produce greenhouse gases with greenhouse effect are stipulated by the Kyoto Protocol.Greenhouse gases covered by the Protocol are: SO2, nitrogen oxides, CO, CO2,CH4, HFC, PFC and SF6.After passing a gaseous mixture of inorganic gases with density relative to hydrogen DH2 = 25, in an acidified solution of KMnO4, its volume is reduced by half and and the density of the mixture in relation to hydrogen isDH2 = 18. If the initial gas mixture is passed through an alkaline solution ofKMnO4 (HO-) it’s volume decreases for 4 times, and the density is reduced to DH2 = 14.

Determine qualitative and quantitative composition in mole percent of the gaseous mixture knowing that its products of combustion with oxygen are completely absorbed by an alkaline solution.

Solution > I started to see which gases reacts with abase after combustion:
2SO2+ O2 = 2SO3 => SO3 + NaOH = NaHSO4
2CO+ O2 = 2CO2 => CO2 + NaOH = NaHCO3 .. and the same reaction for CO2

So gases are CO, CO2 and SO2. And forwards I don’t know manage .. if anyone has any ideas to help me I will thank! The answer is: 50% SO2 , 25%CO si 20% CO2

Answer is rather wrong since 20 % of mixture constitutes nitrogen. (DH2=14)
I agree with 50 % SO2 content.

I would start with the correct reactions,you're given:

Acidic permanganate oxidize CO very slow (such oxidation is possible with silver permanganate). In Orsat gas analysis ammoniacal CuCl is used for absorption of CO. So I treat data for volume of CO2 as sum of two stages.
Problem is presented confusedly. Oxidation with permanganate, later combustion with oxygen (eventual excess of oxygen not removed with pyrogallol).
If CO not oxidized then the rest of gas is CO with the same DH2 as N2.
