After years of extensive research, my research group has finally succeeded in expanding the valency of the carbon atom to allow 6 bonds!
Here is what we made:
First we took the dibenzyl alkyn and cooled it to -196C then using palladium and rhenium, we managed to force the d orbitals on the carbon into accepting the hydrogens on the positions shown. Cold NMR studies revealed that the protons were indeed bound and further reactions with bromine proved the alkyne was present when we isolated the tetra bromo product.
We went back to the drawing board and re-synthesised the compound shown and using ESR and some X-RD we proved the protons were present and bound to the alkyn using the d shells on carbon.
We have decided to call this compound
