Peracetic acid
« on: August 02, 2016, 12:37:20 PM »
Does anyone have a recipe how to make peracetic acid from acetic anhydride and 30% hydrogen peroxide? It will be a solution in acetic acid I understand, not 100%.

Pure peracetic acid is too dangerous. But meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid is much more stable.

Indeed, most explosives such as (peroxides, hydrazine and peracetic acid) are not supplied as pure form.

30% H2O2 react with acetic acid to form peracetic acid and water, but in equilibrium

You may think of ways to remove the water by-product, which is pretty common in typical organic synthesis

Commercial mCPBA contains about 80 % of peroxyacid.

You missunderstood me, I dont want 100%, If I calculate correct I would get 15% peracetic acid as solution in acetic acid if I react acetic anhydride with a 30% hydrogenperoxide. I just want a recipe. My thinking is to stir overnight maby with some cooling so the reaction does not get too hot? I would try first in small scale.

You should add hydrogen peroxide to a mixed solution of your compound in glacial acetic acid. Usually time od 1 hour is sufficient.

I have seen that to make peracetic acid by mixing acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide you need a acid catalyst like sulphuric acid, othervise the reaction is slow?

Hydrazine isn't an explosive, even when pure. It has enough other drawbacks.

Thanks Enthalpy for your input.

Just to make things clear, do you agree with the article in this RSC website?

it is so powerful a reducing agent that it is highly explosive
but in presence of strong oxidizer or catalyst.
