Hi, been just going through my notes regarding how to name coordination compounds and had a question.
If I was given a name such as "diamminedichloro(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) bromide" and I was asked to convert it to its chemical formula which is: [CoCl2(en)(NH3)2].Br, how do I know that the ethylene (en) comes after the dichloro (Cl2) in the chemical formula and its not the other way around? Thanks
Update:
Just read this: "Whatever is inside the square brackets is directly bonded to the metal, i.e. a ligand. Whatever is outside the bracket is either a counterion or a molecule that crystallises with the complex (like water of crystallisation), but is not bonded to it."
So does this mean that the following two are the same:
[CoCl2(en)(NH3)2].Br
[Co(en)Cl2(NH3)2].Br
