Ag + NO3- --> Ag+ + NO

Step 5: What is the net balanced equation?

Net balanced equation? Is that just another way of saying, "Balance the equation"?

Step 6: What is the reduced equation?

I don't recall reading anything about reducing the equations, just balancing them.

Perhaps these should read "net ionic" and "reduction equation"? Where did you get the question from?

I got them from a homework assignment. I'll copy and paste the questions and answers I've got thus far here exactly as they are.



5. For the equation Ag + NO3- --> Ag+ + NO
(Note: This reaction takes place in an acidic solution.)

Step 1: What substance is reduced?

NO

Step 2:  What substance is oxidized?

Ag

Step 3: What is the half reaction for oxidation?

Ag --> Ag+

Step 4:  What is the half reaction for reduction?

NO3- --> NO

Step 5: What is the net balanced equation?

NO

Incorrect. It is one of the reagents that is reduced... NO is a product

Step 2:  What substance is oxidized?

Ag

Correct

Step 3: What is the half reaction for oxidation?

Ag --> Ag+

Nearly, include electrons!

Step 4:  What is the half reaction for reduction?

NO3- --> NO

Incomplete. It is done in acid, and remember to include electrons.

This will get you started, balance this and fill in the missing product(s)

NO3- + H+ + e- -------> NO + ...

No, it's one of the reacting ions.

Step 3: Ag - e --> Ag+
Yes, but you need to add a charge to the "e"

so it's Ag - e- --> Ag+

or

Ag --> Ag+ + e-

Both are acceptable.

Step 4: I don't really understand what's going on here...  :)

Ok, where does the oxygen go in

NO3- + H+ + e- -------> NO + Something  <- I have not balanced this for you

What is "something"? It must have oxygen and hydrogen in it right?

Now balance the equation.
