TfOH - purification, storage, usage. Need help and advice
« on: February 08, 2017, 01:21:44 PM »
Hello, iam new to using triflic acid, i was really hoping that someone could help me a little bit.

I have come across a very nasty sample of triflic acid and i really need to purify it, i have tried to do a vacuum destillation under nitrogen atmosphere, but it didint work as well as it should, i have looked throught many papers and i just can't find a simple and efficient way to purify it.

How can i purify it?

After purification, whats best for storage? and what about usage? should i purge it with nitrogen or argon prior to use? how should i work with it?

thanks in advance

Is there a reason you can't buy it?

Yes, I would definitely store it under an inert atmosphere.
My research: Google Scholar and Researchgate

the main reason is: it would take over a whole month for it to arrive, and i only need it to do one example, so a small quantity would be enought

How do you know you have to purify it?

it should be a colorless liquid, and its completely darkbrown because it corroded the stopper and the bottle cap.

Besides this, i runned my reaction as told in the proceadure and instead of the product i got only hydrolysis product, indicating that the reaction worked, but something wasnt good, since it had water to react, i tought it could only be the acid since its being badly sealed and shows a dark colour from corroding the cap.
