Aluminium acac synthesis equation
« on: March 05, 2017, 09:53:46 PM »
Hi,

I was wondering whether my equation is correct.

Al2(SO4)3·18H2O + 3 acacH  ->  Al(acac)3 +   3 H+ + 3 SO4- + 18H2O

Al2(SO4)3·18H2O + 3 acacH  ->  Al(acac)3 +   3 H(SO4) + 18H2O

I just don't think that 3 H(SO4) is correct.

Reactions are badly balanced. Such molecule H(SO4) does not exist. Such anion SO4- does not exist.

Are you thing Al(acac)3 is stable in acid solution? Check procedure of synthesis.
Can weak acid acacH replace the strong one H2SO4?

Oh well here is the following instructions.

-Transfer 2 mL acetylacetone into a flask. Add 40 mL distilled water followed by 8 mL of 5 M ammonia solution and mix well.
-In a 250 mL conical flask dissolve 2 g aluminium sulfate [Al2(SO4)3·18H2O] in 30 mL of cold distilled water.
-To the almost clear aluminium solution add the ammoniacal acetylacetone solution in portions. --After complete addition of the acetylacetone, check the pH using indicator paper and, if
the solution is still acidic, add small portions of dilute ammonia solution until it is neutral.

I'm assuming then the ammonia is part of the reaction in the balanced equation?

Al2(SO4)3·18H2O + 3 acacH + 6NH3 ->  Al(acac)3 + 3(NH4)2SO4 + 18 H2O

Sorry if its wrong chemistry is not my strongest subject.

Al(acac)3 is stable in acetylacetone when ammonia is added to stabilise it. Also weak acid acacH cannot replace the strong H2SO4.

So i'm abit confused, i think its

Al2(SO4)3·18H2O + 6 acacH + 6NH3 ->  2Al(acac)3 + 3(NH4)2SO4 + 18 H2O

The stoichiometry fits. Do you think its right?

If stoichiometry fits (really fits) that this is right.
