Lately I the question has stuck in my mind, does any body know the answer ? Frankly I did try to find it myself, unfortunately i didn't. So can someone help.

Its just a trade name by Kinetic Chemicals. If I had to hazard a guess Freon was something catchy people came up with in a meeting that sounds a little like its function (freezing) and it was the 12th iteration of some set of experiments.

12 relates with the numbers of atoms in the freon. 2 or 3 places telling carbons and each halogen (some are 1 less than the atom count). From the name, you know the exact composition of the small freons.
