No more Chmoogle!
« on: June 10, 2006, 12:28:31 PM »
The forces that be (ie Google) have set their sights on Chmoogle and decided to take Chmoogle to court for trademark infringement. Instead of fighting, Chmoogle has relinquished that name and reverted to eMolecules. C&EN has a nice article here http://pubs.acs.org/isubscribe/journals/cen/84/i23/html/8423newscripts.html#2

You can read EMolecules views here http://www.emolecules.com/doc/google_vs_chmoogle/index.htm

And we had the lead developer of the chmoogle on the forums answering questions about some of the inner workings of the chmoogle code, you can read his old posts here http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?board=31.0
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

It's just age-old trademark rivalry. Anyone should have seen it coming.

I am glad as long eMolecule/Chmoogle is still available.

Apparently, "Chmoogle" was exploiting the goodwill people associated with "Google". Understandable, though sad that Google went to court.

I don't think so, I buy their explanation of reasons for calling the site Chmoogle. For me Googfle action is a classic hand-twisting policy.

Do you know that their motto is "Do no evil"?

That's an interesting motto. At least Microsoft's motto isn't that.

Does anyone know what Microsoft's motto is or if they even have one?

Wow. Google really is starting to get annoying.

It almost seams like it's becoming just another annoying uber corporation that only cares about money.  :-\
