Hello guys,

I am trying to make new cleaning product which contains:
Ethyl acetate, Methanol, Hexane, Toluene, Glycerol and some fragrances

However, my problems is a bad smell of that liquid. I have tried some fragrances, but it smells like a nail varnish remover. I need these substances for the particular cleaning effect. Have you guys any advice for me what to do with that smell, what substance or fragrance should I try add with which would be the cleaning effect kept?

Your recognize the odour of ethyl acetate from the nail polish remover.

Remove that one? Replace by an other solvent, or maybe a less volatile ester? I doubt you can fool the human nose by adding a fragrance.

And did you notice that methanol is both unhealthy, volatile and badly flammable ? Hexane isn't so nice neither. To my opinion, they shouldn't compose a cleaning liquid.

A fundamental question would be if your cleaner shall evaporate away. I suppose it doesn't, since it contains glycerol. Then you can probably replace the very volatile and toxic components by non-volatile and non-toxic ones. As a gut feeling (the chemists here would know it better), bigger molecules that contain also more of the functions (alcohol, ester... and longer alkane) should do the same job more safely.
