Effect of vacuum on bandgap in copper complex
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:11:20 AM »
Hi everyone,

Is there any effect of the vacuum on the bandgap, for example between d-d orbitals ?

I am asking this since I have a blue copper complex that I put in 140 degC under very high vacuum and I noticed that the color changes from blue-green-yellow-transparent. Which either means that the bandgap is getting closer and closer, or the the Cu2+ was partially reduced to Cu1+.

Thanks and regards,
Yousef

More likely, you're simply drying a moist or hydrated solid.  Does it seem likely to you that a macro effect, like vacuum, has an effect on quantum phenomena, such as d-d orbitals?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
