equilibrium and reaction rate
« on: June 22, 2006, 05:04:11 PM »
 i found this question in a book but didnt get it . actually , what i dont get is the answer of the book not the question!

 consider the following: 2HBr(g)<-> H2(g) + Br2(g)
initially, HBr is added to an empty flask . how do the rate of the forward and reverse reactions change as the system proceeds to equilibrium?

          forward rate           reverse rate
(A)     increases                increases
(B)     increases                decreases
(C)     decreases               decreases
(D)     decreases               increases

 can anyone explain why A is the correct answer?
i sounds impossible for the system to reach equilibrium if both the forward and reverse rate increase. because at EQ , both must be equal.

thank you !!

I would go for D. But I am known to be occasionally wrong  ;)

I'll second D, system initially pushes in the forward direction, but as it gets closer to equilibrium the forward rate slows down, and consequently the reverse rate increases.
